Privacy policy

Updated 18 October 2026

Offgrid66 stores only what the map needs to work. Most of it stays on your phone.

Data that stays on your phone

This data is only on your phone and is not sent to the server:

  • the track you record with REC, with its points and times
  • the map settings and the area you looked at last
  • the offline map areas you have downloaded
  • a copy of your saved places and routes, and changes not yet sent, so they work without a connection.

Your location is used on the phone to show you on the map. It is read in the background only while REC is on, and the phone shows this in the status bar. Your location is not sent to the server unless you save a place or a route.

Data stored on the server

  • Saved places: name, type, note and position.
  • Saved routes: name, waypoints, the route line and its length.

Places and routes are stored in your account, so they appear on all your devices.

Map, weather and route planning

When you browse the map, the app fetches the map tiles through our server from the National Land Survey of Finland and OpenStreetMap. Weather, the aurora forecast, place names and route planning work the same way: the app sends a map position to our server, and the server fetches the data from the Finnish Meteorological Institute, the National Land Survey or its own routing service. These services see our server, not you.

The server records requests in an ordinary access log: IP address, time and the requested address. The log has a fixed size limit, and the oldest lines are removed automatically. It is used only to investigate faults.

Website

offgrid66.com uses no cookies, no analytics and no scripts or fonts from other services. The website's server does not log visits.

Email

When you email us, we receive your address and your message. We use them only to reply to you, and we will not add you to a mailing list. A message is kept for as long as handling the matter requires.

Where the data is kept

The servers for the app and the website are in Hetzner's data centre in Helsinki, Finland. App data is not transferred outside the EU.

Our email is with Proton Mail, whose servers are in Switzerland. The European Commission has found Switzerland's level of data protection adequate.

Legal basis

Storing places and routes is part of the service you ask to use. Replying to messages and investigating faults with the log are based on legitimate interest.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete the data stored about you. You can export your routes yourself as GPX files.

When you delete a place or a route in the app, it is marked as deleted and disappears from all your devices. On request, we also delete it permanently from the server.

If you think your data is being handled wrongly, you can complain to the Data Protection Ombudsman.

Emergency card and 112

The emergency card does not send your location anywhere by itself. When you tap Call 112 or Text message, the call or the message goes from your phone as usual.
