Offgrid66 is made for Lapland: the map, your track and the emergency card work without a network, and the app tells you when it gets dark and whether you make it back.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best topographic map app for hiking in Lapland?
It depends on what you need in the terrain. If the map has to work without a network and your position has to be ready for an emergency call, you need offline maps and an emergency feature. Berry, mushroom and nautical maps are in Karttaselain.
Does Excursionmap (Retkikartta) work without a network?
No. According to Metsähallitus, Excursionmap has no offline maps and is not a mobile service for navigating in the terrain. It is good for planning a trip in advance. Metsähallitus's Luontoon app has free offline maps in beta.
Is Karttaselain free?
The basic version is free. Offline maps, route drawing and sync belong to the Plus subscription, which costs €40.49 a year or €10.49 for two months.
Do I need a paid app for an emergency?
No. In an emergency, call 112. The Offgrid66 emergency card, which shows your position in two formats, is free. The 112 Suomi app from the Emergency Response Centre Agency also sends your location.
