In short
- Partner: ResaHost, a Finnish hosting and maintenance service.
- Servers: in Helsinki. The website's and the app's data stay in Finland.
- Capacity: scales with use. When more people use the app, the server can grow without moving to another platform.
- Support: in Finnish.
The load follows the seasons
A hiking map is not used evenly through the year. Lapland is busiest during the autumn colours, the winter holidays and the spring skiing season. When the aurora forecast rises, many people open the map on the same evening. And when Offgrid66 reaches the App Store, the first few days can bring more users than the whole month before.
On a small server of fixed size, peaks like these mean a slow site exactly when people need it most. On a large one, you pay all year for capacity you use for a few weeks. ResaHost gave us an environment whose size can change with demand. We start light and grow as use grows.
Why Finnish
Offgrid66's map, weather and routing go through our server, and the app stores users' places and routes there. We wanted that data in Finland and under Finnish law, with a maintainer you can reach in Finnish.
ResaHost is a Finnish company, and its service is produced in Finland. In August 2026 the Association for Finnish Work (Suomalainen työ ry) granted ResaHost's WordPress hosting and maintenance service the Key Flag symbol for Finnish service (Avainlippu, "Suomalaista palvelua"), licence number 51558. The symbol cannot be self-declared: the association first checks where the service is produced, its degree of Finnishness and its ownership.
That does not mean every piece of software involved is Finnish. It means the company that produces the service, its decisions and its support are here.
What it means for you
Offgrid66's main promise is that the map works without a network. On the trail, the server is not involved at all: the downloaded map area, your track and the emergency card work on the phone with no connection.
The server decides everything else: how fast the site loads, how quickly a map area downloads at home before you leave, and how the weather and aurora data update. When these also work on a busy evening, the app is ready for the moment the signal ends.
Full disclosure
Offgrid66 and ResaHost both belong to Resaco Oy, a company based in Rovaniemi. We say so here so you can judge the choice yourself. The reasons are the same as for any service: servers in Finland, capacity that scales, and support in Finnish.
